How EYE-SYNC® works

For us to pay attention and interact with the world around us, the brain must constantly predict incoming information . The 0.25 second delay between receiving information and acting requires us to synchronize our behavior in order to interact with real-time events. The brain uses our eyes to select content it wants to interact with. This process of synchronization is critical to perform in the present moment, and to be oriented properly to what we see.

The EYE-SYNC® technology measures variance, or how much error is produced when interacting with visual cues. Each assessment is designed to identify the quality of performance with respect to synchronizing eye movement with a moving object, or gaze fixation, which is required when we are in motion. Both represent the process of synchronization that the brain performs using our eyes, over and over again throughout our lifespan.

What the results indicate

After completing the EYE-SYNC® smooth pursuit, saccade, VOR or VORx assessment, the clinician receives a report with both metrics and visuals describing individual’s variance, or how far from the target their eye position was during the task.

When there is a consistent calibration process, the majority of individuals are unlikely to have obvious impaired function. However, based on extensive peer-reviewed literature, abnormal results can be indicative of ocularmotor and/or oculo-vestibular impairment. This report can also be used as a serial assessment to visualize improvement.

Correcting Impairments

Historically, eye movement assessments have always utilized visual fixation to measure static vision quality. However, when the outside world begins to move, and our eyes have to move to orient ourselves to these movements, the brain takes over, using a complex system of neural networks which initiate dynamic visual synchronization.

These are the foundational elements of the EYE-SYNC therapy and performance applications. Once an impairment has been identified, EYE-SYNC can then be used in the early stages of rehabilitation to progressively expose the patient to visual stimuli, in order to improve gaze fixation and stability. Once the patient has progressed to more advanced stages of rehabilitation, the patient may utilize performance features to improve ocularmotor and oculo-vestibular function using real time feedback. This allows the patient to visualize their own progress, and allows the clinician to understand whether the patient’s condition is prepared for prior levels of function.
