For us to pay attention and interact with the world around us, the brain must constantly predict incoming information . The 0.25 second delay between receiving information and acting requires us to synchronize our behavior in order to interact with real-time events. The brain uses our eyes to select content it wants to interact with. This process of synchronization is critical to perform in the present moment, and to be oriented properly to what we see.
The EYE-SYNC® technology measures variance, or how much error is produced when interacting with visual cues. Each assessment is designed to identify the quality of performance with respect to synchronizing eye movement with a moving object, or gaze fixation, which is required when we are in motion. Both represent the process of synchronization that the brain performs using our eyes, over and over again throughout our lifespan.
After completing the EYE-SYNC® smooth pursuit, saccade or VOR assessment, the clinician receives a report with metrics and visuals describing individual’s variance, or how far from the target their eye position was during the task.
When there is a clear pattern of spatial accuracy and cycle-by-cycle consistency, the individual is unlikely to have an obvious impairment. Based on extensive peer-reviewed literature, abnormal patterns can be indicative of ocularmotor or oculo-vestibular impairment. Historically, eye assessments have always utilized static fixation to measure vision quality. However, when the outside world begins to move, and our eyes have to move to orient ourselves to these movements, the brain takes over using a complex system of neural networks which initiate synchronization in order to respond to visual cues present in the outside world.
In the absence of impairment, these eye movements can be serially measured to provide insights around the status of the function of the brain in real time. By doing so, individuals can identify when the performance of the brain is optimized, or being negatively impacted by lifestyle choices which can delay recovery and increase risk.
